DIY Spa Day – Basic Idea and Tips

We’ve probably all had enough of the recent crazy weather and couldn’t be more ready for summer. Thankfully, it’s finally here! Pulling out our summer clothing from the back of the closet should not be the only thing we do in preparation. We need to get our hair, skin and face in tip top shape. As lovely as it would be for us to head over to the best spa and spend the day pampering ourselves, if your wallet is as empty as mine is – due to all my shopping for this new weather you may think a spa day is out of the question. Nope! It is still in our budget, even if you only have a few singles and change floating around the bottom of your wallet. We can now enjoy some fun and oh-so-beneficial spa treatments we can do with supplies already in your kitchen.

The winter is a killer on our skin and we need to be fresh-faced. A scrub will buff off dead skin cells and leave you smooth as silk.

strawberries

Ingredients:

3 strawberries and 1 tablespoon of honey

Mash up your strawberries in a bowl and add the honey. Now you need to squish them up with your fingers. Let the fun and easy part begin: massage the mask all over your face, rinse and done!

Now that your face is rid of that yucky top layer, its time for you to really clean out your pores. Soft, clear skin, here we come.

oatmeal

Ingredients:

1/2 cup oatmeal

1 egg

1/2 banana

1 tablespoon raw honey

Cook the oatmeal and let it cool off a bit, burned skin is not what you’re going for here. After it has cooled, crack the egg and add the yolk into the oatmeal and mix, mix, mix. I know this is starting to feel like cooking but you’re almost done. Put in the banana and the honey and mash it all together. Apply this mask all over your face and neck, smooth it out but don’t worry if it’s a bit gloppy. Let’s now lay back and read some blog posts… Okay, I know that you are now sucked in and cannot stop reading, but it has been twenty minutes! It is time to wash your face, pat dry and enjoy how beautiful we look.

You need to stop staring at your perfect skin in the mirror; there is still so much beautifying to be done. Winter has definitely made everyone’s hair look a bit lackluster which is just not okay with me, I don’t know about you.

If you are unlucky like I am and suffer from oily hair, I know you are dying to rid all of that build up. Don’t fret, I have the solution.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

3 cups water

Grab an empty bottle, old Vitamin Water, Diet Coke, anything will do. Pour in the water and baking soda and shake, shake, shake! Go hop in the shower and wash your hair normally with shampoo. After rinsing out the shampoo, pour your new cleansing mixture all over your head. Rinse it out and condition normally. You can now enjoy perfectly clean hair! The ingredients for this mixture can also be doubled, or tripled if you have a big enough bottle and left in the shower. Use it about once a week, or as needed, but don’t keep it for more than a month or two.

You’re not done with your hair TLC. Winter zaps hair of moisture and can leave it dry and brittle. The blow-drying, straightening and curly doesn’t help – so unfair right? Now it’s time to add some moisture back.

avocado

Ingredients:

1 avocado

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 banana

1 egg

Using a blender will make mixing the ingredients much easier. If you don’t have one handy, not to fret: you can still make this but be prepared to do some heavy mashing and squashing with your hands. Add all of the ingredients into your blender and blend until it’s smooth (or add them to a bowl and go give your hands a workout). Apply the mask starting at the roots; do not forget your ends, they take most of the beating during the winter. Wrap up your head in an old towel or t-shirt or risk getting the mask all over your shoulders. Time to relax and let this mask do its job for the next twenty minutes or so. Rinse your hair out well until the mask is out, shampoo, condition and become obsessed with touching your silky hair.

I’ll admit, from the neck up you are in tip-top shape, but from the neck down could still use a bit of rejuvenation. Your face isn’t the only skin that dried up this winter, the rest of your body needs moisture, too. Now that we are really getting in the spirit of warm weather, let’s get tropical with a body scrub.

large grapefruits

Ingredients:

3-4 large grapefruits

4 to 5 tablespoons of coconut or olive oil

1/2 cup sea salt

Cut the grapefruits in half and squeeze out all the juice into a bowl. Your grapefruits may be mostly empty of juice but you’re not done with it quite yet. Rub the rind over your super dry areas – elbows, knees and heels beware. Back to the bowl of juice; dump in the oil and salt and mix it up. Time to get rid of your flaky skin for tank top weather. Scoop out some of the scrub and rub from the ankles up – legs, arms, back and tummy, they all get some scrubbin’. If you use the scrub on dry skin you will really get the full exfoliating benefits. Now shower because you are a sticky mess.

Think that you are finished? Well think again, there is one last step. Personally, I am over dark, wintery nail polish, I am ready for bright, summery shades and I hope you are too! Before you get to painting, you need your hands and toes to look just as beautiful as your polish.

Ingredients:

4-6 ripe Strawberries

1 tablespoon of coarse salt (you may use sea salt or kosher salt)

2 tablespoon olive oil

Start by mashing up the strawberries with a fork or your hands and then add in the salt and oil. Rub this grainy paste all over your hands and feet, take your time and get into all of the nooks and crannies. Strawberries have a natural fruit acid ingredient which is gentle, yet effective. After rinsing it off, you will revel in the softness and you are now ready to add a pop of color with a fun manicure and pedicure. Don’t forget to make sure you swipe some nail polish remover over finger and toe nails before painting them to make sure you have removed all of the oil from the scrub.

Now you are ready for summer and looking gorgeous to boot!
